Aerospace

At the recent field trip to Aerospace, we were lucky enough to tour the facilities. I thought the building itself was incredible, and I particularly enjoyed seeing the launch room. Those at Aerospace are extremely passionate about what they do. I feel like the work they do at Aerospace has a significant impact on the engineering world.

One of the projects they are currently working on at Aerospace is a novel space deorbiting method. Using a lithium-ion battery deorbiter, they are igniting the battery into thermal runaway to generate thrust to deorbit. This method could reduce the space junk from satellites without adding extra fuel as it is using the battery that is already on board.

One particular event in Aerospace history that interests me is the creation of GPS:

January 23,1992

The featureless deserts lies ahead of me, miles of seemingly nothing in every direction. Yet, enemies lie close. Looking down at the new device in my hand, I watch the red dot North of base camp. There the enemy lies. I cannot help but be grateful for the technology in my palm, for the development of a system that can find something in miles of desert.
